Free Speed Part II. Pose Method of Running
by Tim Crowley CSCS
In this second installment of free speed, we will look the pose method of running, designed by Dr. Nicholas Romanov.
The pose technique of running is widely used by age grouper and elite triathletes alike. Former Olympic triathlon coach George Dallum is big advocate of the Pose technique. The pose method approaches running as a skill sport, much like tennis or golf. The concepts used are derived from efficient animal movements and sports such as ballet.
The pose method centered around the runner’s pose or the” S-like stance”. This is keeping the runner’s body centered on one leg with the knee bent and on the front half of the foot. This prevents over striding and landing on one’s heels.
The most important aspect of the pose technique is the harnessing of elastic energy in the lower leg for more efficient running. This efficient running helps to minimize loading forces, and thereby lessening the chance of overuse injuries. And since the stored energy is more efficient, you can run at a given speed on less energy, or faster without expending anything additional.
The program highlights excellent running drills, and specific strength drills which are great to add to your existing strength plan. The drills can easily be carried out prior to your speed sessions, while the strength exercises can be done either in the weight room or at the track. Resisted movements done with elastic bands are especially challenging. The program containd both a workbook and video.
The Pose method workbook outlines the drills progressively, allowing for safe and efficient building in difficulty and intensity. The Video is also good to see the complete movements done correctly.
If you are looking for a systematic approach to improve your running, and view all three triathlon disciplines as skill sports, then the pose method is worth looking at.
You can order the Pose Video or DVD here.
I have used the pose methods in my training, and those of the athletes I coach with success.
