SPECIALTY: I teach people who want to learn POSE method: I am not a running coach, or someone who can help athletes with their training routines or advice on how to win a marathon. I can only share my understanding of the theory and practice of running. That is something I will do with whoever comes to me. |
My name is Adam Hartley. I teach the Pose Method of running in Geneva, Switzerland. I first met Nicholas Romanov at the end of January 2008 when I asked if he would instruct a running certification clinic. In the 12 weeks that followed, I studied with him for a total of 16 days and qualified as a Level III running coach.
I quickly realised that Dr. Romanov’s POSE Method is not really about running. Yes, by applying this technique you will run faster and a lot more efficiently, and you will avoid the impact injuries that result from an incorrect understanding of how nature intended us to interact with the field of gravity. These are pioneering developments, and in themselves exceptional and magnificent results.
But these are minor benefits compared to the vast field of possibility that opens up when you begin to practice POSE. It is frightening re-learning the ability to fall when you have spent your life stopping yourself from falling flat on your face. But when you start to live your life by falling, you open yourself up to the limitless unknown. You no longer see the world as if it were fixed by binary outcomes but rather as framed by a number of potential outcomes capable of subdividing and multiplying infinitesimally. The unknown is thus not so much a threat as an exhilarating series of unending opportunities.
In other words, POSE is simultaneously both a brilliant description of how to develop physical skill and by extension a precise metaphorical training manual for life. The duality works because to run well requires that you have a highly developed sense of perception about where your body parts are in relation to time and space. This perception is needed for you to be able to coordinate the required sequence of actions in the proper manner in order to produce the desired end result - which is what we perceive as movement. But this highly developed sense of perception transfers naturally and unconsciously across into other areas of your life.
This leads to a couple of interesting discoveries. The first is that the analysis of movement provides a key for deciphering the code of subconscious communication. As we develop our sense of perception we start to recognise the language of the body, the expression of self revealed through actions performed. It quickly becomes evident that we cannot lie: every second of every minute we transmit information about ourselves to others, directly revealing exactly who we are and what we think. The receipt of these signals are normally registered by the subconscious brain, giving rise to the sense of trust and other feelings and emotions that are continuously communicated between human beings. By practicing the Pose Method we increase our conscious perceptual reception thereby attuning ourselves more accurately, and in a shorter response time, to the nuances operating within our environment.
The second, and in my opinion perhaps the most important discovery, is actually the simplest: by performing the required action to produce the desired movement, we stop the cycle of indecision and inaction that takes us away from the present. Constant questioning and mental processing disengages our perceptual ability, thereby building fear, indecision, and stasis - a lack of action. It is all very well intending to become a better runner, parent, business executive, actor or writer. But without performing the required actions to produce the desired results, you simply will not advance towards your goal.
By developing your perception through a focus on specific actions, POSE running can help you achieve your goals. The starting point is teaching you to focus on pulling your foot from the ground as soon as your body weight has passed over the point of support. By spending less time with your feet on the ground you are spending more time flying through the air, light on your feet – thereby running faster and reducing injuries. And, metaphorically, by training yourself to take action, you complete the cycle required to make personal progress. Life is movement, lack of movement is death.
Dr. Romanov follows a long line of natural scientists who have studied human motion. By virtue of having described his Unifying Theory of Movement, it is my belief that Dr. Romanov has proved himself to be the first to have such a complete understanding of how the human body has been designed to create movement. There is no doubt that our understanding will continue to evolve, but I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to share the knowledge of this exciting phase in the development of our understanding, and I am grateful to Dr. Romanov for taking the time to explain the mechanics of physical motion in human beings to a non-scientist such as myself. I find the details of nature’s intricate design as he has described it innately beautiful.
But the satisfaction derived from this intellectual fascination with human movement is nothing compared to an understanding of what it is to be human; to face risk and make active choices. The increased perception that results from practicing the Pose Method provides a glimpse of something extremely powerful and perhaps beyond our current understanding of the universe. At the heart of the Pose Method’s inspiration is the fact it represents the literal and metaphorical potential of the human race through its development of physical skill. I am proud to have qualified as a Level III Pose Method running coach. And I am excited to have the opportunity to share my understanding of this knowledge with those who wish to benefit from the POSE Method.
