My story begins in February of 2002. I was your typical family man and was eagerly anticipating the arrival of my 3rd child. One day out of the blue, I woke up experiencing some numbness in my toes. Thinking nothing of it, I carried on with life as normal. Within a few weeks, the numbness moved up my body and I eventually became partially paralyzed from the chest down. Despite receiving a round of steroids, I still didn't realize this was my first relapse of multiple sclerosis.

The numbness subsided and life moved on, but about 6 months later, my right arm and eventually my entire right side grew numb and weak. This was relapse number two and I received the diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. Those of us with MS know what came next for me. I grew depressed and wanted to give up on life and any hope of a future. I was overwhelmed with my diagnosis and began experiencing great fatigue and even had to use a cane for mobility. This is the state I lived in for almost a year.
Tired of feeling sorry for myself and living a life of despair, I decided to pursue the sport of triathlon. Not being the norm for MS rehabilitation, I informed my doctor that I was going to do long distance triathlons. Despite a bit of medical reluctance, I began my training. My family needed me and I was going to do all that was in my power to be healthy. Not knowing how to swim didn't concern me. Nor did the fact that 5 miles on a bicycle left me tired and dizzy. I pressed on. I had a goal. A year and a half later, I was the United States Triathlon champion in the physically challenged category. In 2005, I will be a member of the USA Paralympic Development Team and wear the stars and stripes at the triathlon world championships.
Triathlon isn't for everyone, but the "keep tri-ing" mindset is. People with MS need hope, they deserve it. My message is one of using obstacles as opportunities. It's one of taking care of yourself and never giving up. It's one of encouragement to do what you can in order to reach your goals. Our loved ones need us just as much as we need them. My desire is to see people strive for the extraordinary and reach their goals, no matter how big.
As I continue "fighting the good fight," I would love to be a part of yours. I am available as a motivational speaker as well as for health and wellness seminars. I have taught and spoken to thousands of people in schools, churches, camps, & support groups. It would be my pleasure to work with you. Just drop me a line and we can talk about it.
Blessings,
David Kyle
