IN SEARCH OF A 10K PR - Part II by Dr. Nicholas Romanov
Last issue, in Part One, we presented Dr. Romanov's theories on running, specifically the relationship between distance and speed and the overall scheme for 10K success. And, truth be told, that's all most think about when embarking on a campaign to lower their 10K PR ... which is why very few ever reach their goals. In this second installment, Dr.Romanov rounds out the program, detailing your approach to strength development, running technique and psychological preparation. Full Article »

IN SEARCH OF A 10K PR - Part I by Dr. Nicholas Romanov
This article is addressed to the army of dedicated runners who give immense time, effort and emotion in order to achieve their best results. And who, mostly, train by themselves, drawing their knowledge from a variety of sources, including friends and acquaintances. With the greatest respect for the passion and commitment of these runners, I write this article to help them to get the whole picture of the training process and to make it more effective for them. Lynn McFadden was introduced to Pose Method® in 1995 when she met Dr. Nicholas Romanov in Miami, Florida. She was among the first athletes in the U.S. to begin practicing Pose and assisted Dr. Romanov in some of his earliest clinics. As a USATriathlon coach, she taught his method at USAT Jr. Development Camps in Clermont, FL. Recently relocated back to Miami from New York City, Lynn lives with her husband and continues to teach and coach Pose Method® and help with its development.

McFadden’s passion for running dates back to the 70's, but recurrent and varied injuries over 22 years sidelined her so frequently, that disappointment began to overshadow the joy. The advent of triathlon and cross training offered an outlet, and she participated in her first tri in 1983. Duathlons, bike racing, and ocean life-guard competitions soon followed. She usually finished in the top three in all these events, and was often the overall winner. Using cycling as the basis of her training, she dominated duathlons in South Florida for several years. As a triathlete, she was a USA National team member in 92, and qualified for World Championships.

Consistency continued to elude her in running - she had never gotten through a racing season without an injury. Having tried every possible resource for help, she never imagined when she began private sessions with Dr. Romanov, that she was embarking on a transformative experience that would not only end her injury cycle, but change her paradigm on running (and all sports and athletics), allowing her to run without pain, faster and with less volume.

Following Romanov’s innovative teaching and training methods, Lynn managed to abandon her old running habits, and focused instead on changing her bio-mechanics; developing "muscle elasticity" for handling the Pose technique; and practicing balance and agility drills to hone the newly emerging ‘skill’ of running.

"One thing that really struck me was that despite the fact that I was injured, Romanov insisted that I could and must run. I couldn’t believe it! The caveat was that I was only permitted to run as long as I was able to maintain proper bio-mechanics and not feel the pain. For me, that meant running 100 yard repeats at first, but it was a start, and I progressed steadily from there. It was a process that took time, patience and commitment. I will be always grateful to Dr. Romanov for his steadfastness, commitment and having the patience to work with me. (I know I was a tough nut to crack). He is an excellent and compassionate teacher and coach. His brilliance and original theories have made vast and unprecedented contributions to sports science and radically changed and influenced running and running research as we know it."

For McFadden, the benefits of Pose could not be overstated. A year later, after emerging unscathed from some early season races, she entered the US Track and Field Racing Series in South Florida - a commitment to 10-12 races over the course of 6 months. Armed with her new ever-evolving skill and Romanov’s training program, she won the series overall. "I couldn’t believe that I was able to go from race to race and not breakdown like I’d done in the past, and that in my forties, I was running my fastest times again. Just getting through a whole season of racing without getting hurt, was a first for me. It was amazing!" Since switching to Pose, she has not had running injuries.

McFadden emphasizes Dr. Romanov’s unique brand of strength, flexibility and agility development in her coaching, which she considers vital to improving technique. Having worked with Dr. Romanov as an athlete, she trained for races using his programs and race preparation schedules, which are now available to all athletes through the posetech website. She uses video equipment to help with teaching and analyzing running technique.

Lynn is committed to helping others experience the freedom and benefits of Pose. She still trains at all three triathlon sports, practices yoga, and is a USATriathlon coach. A former ocean lifeguard, she works with athletes to help them enjoy and improve their ocean swimming.

Lynn holds a bachelor’s degree in French from the University of New Orleans, and speaks French and Spanish fluently. She looks forward to furthering her education in the field of human movement and sharing it with others.
