Running seems to be a natural progression for most weekend warriors when time and technique constrains them from progressing further in their previously chosen sports. At first running has fitness- and weight-maintaining elements, and entices with its simplicity. So it's perhaps not all that strange then that almost no-one thinks that running is a technique sport.

I came to long distance Ironman triathlon quite recently after ice hockey, judo, Varsity rowing (Toronto '89) and squash; all sports where strength and endurance are important but are nothing without technique.

Big lungs aren't everything. As my coach used to say "if you throw a rowing machine into the water... it sinks".

My philosophy is that anyone can improve with very little time investment, as long as there is focus and technique. In fact, as one gets older, the key is not to build a bigger engine, but to keep from getting ill or injured and - most importantly - to make efficiency gains. This is where the Pose MethodŽ comes in.

I have completed three ironman races and been to one olympic-distance world age-group championship on less than 7 hours per week of "endurance" training. Weighing in at 90 kg (198 lbs), those I train with are always a bit surprised that I run in racing flats or "fashion" shoes. In fact, I feel even better running barefoot. You can too.

In my spare time, I work in an investment bank in the City.
