COMPRESSION SOCKS 101

Got varicose veins? Try compression socks/stockings - they could help you! These specialized long socks are made out of strong elastic material and fit tightly from the foot to the knee/thigh. They are helpful in dealing with certain vein problems, but could have an adverse effect of eventually affecting the leg muscles and their natural work. As an old saying goes: too much of a good thing is always a bad thing.

Who should wear the compression socks? Anyone who needs them, really. From the runners to the workers of various professions performing their tasks standing, and everyone in between. While the compression socks won't make you run faster, they will sure make you feel better and might even help prevent serious issues like blood clots.

How long should one wear the compression socks? When you need them, wear them as long as necessary. But it is best to alternate with periods of time when compression socks are not worn.

Things to keep in mind:
  • Compression stockings should only be worn when you're active (Example: running, exercising, working, etc)
  • They have to be taken off before going to sleep
  • They should be taken off when you know you will be inactive for a prolonged period of time. (Example: sitting down to read or watch TV)
  • They should not become a standard part of your daily wardrobe to avoid the adverse effect. However, in certain cases of various vein problems mixed in with various job requirements (Example: standing on your feet all day), unfortunately it might be necessary for some people to wear compression stockings on daily basis.
  • The selection of proper compression stockings mainly depends on your physical structure and the severity of the vein condition.
Typically, the compression socks available without prescription provide rather adequate support, but in some cases it could be not enough. For further assistance and to obtain a pair of prescription compression socks find a local doctor specializing in vein treatments. To read more about varicose veins click here.
